Wicked Filming Locations in England: Travel Guide

With Wicked and Wicked: For Good now streaming, fans finally get to see Oz come to life from the comfort of their own homes — but what many don’t realize is that much of this magical world was filmed in very real (and very visitable, for the most part) locations across England.

“Having loved the story of Wicked over the last 20+ years, the prospect of stepping into the physical places where this cinematic universe emerged was more than enough to convince me to book my flight to London.” -Ashley (CEO, AKFasso)

From blooming tulip fields transformed into Munchkinland to dramatic waterways that helped shape the look and feel of Shiz, every location below is somewhere you can visit yourself!

Wicked & Wicked: For Good

A location guide for real-life production spots.

Munchkinland Tulip Field (Norfolk)

Nearby attractions: Sandringham Estate and King’s Lynn

One of the most colorful scenes in Wicked — Munchkinland — was partially filmed in a massive tulip field in Norfolk. Production teams partnered with local farmers to plant millions of real tulips, creating the vibrant backdrop used for this famous region of Oz. (Source: Norfolk Tulips)

Upon visiting the area, I was told that the original tulip field used in the film has since been replaced with another crop, but – good news! – fans of the film can still explore nearby fields every spring managed by those same farmers AND help support a great cause: Tulips for Tapping. Reservations are required.

You can pair this stop with a detour to Sandringham Estate, the private country retreat of the British royal family or spend time exploring King’s Lynn, a historic market town with plenty of shopping and a picturesque harbor. I booked one night at The Duke’s Head Hotel to be in the center of it all.

Travel tip: This area is best reached by car, though trains from London can get you close via King’s Lynn.

Hampstead, London (Wicked-adjacent)

While Hampstead doesn’t appear on-screen in Oz, it played a role behind the scenes during production and is a fun “Wicked-adjacent” stop for fans.

This North London neighborhood is known for its village feel, leafy streets, and panoramic city views from Hampstead Heath. It’s a great contrast to the more fantastical filming locations and offers insight into where cast and crew spent their time off camera.

“I loved living here. I was in Hampstead when I was here. And, I loved my walks in the heath. I loved meandering around and visiting different shops and places and pubs.” - Ariana Grande (Source: BBC Radio 1)

If you’re already in London, this is an easy addition to your itinerary — and a great excuse to explore one of the city’s most scenic areas.

Travel tip: Make a reservation at The Holly Bush for a full culinary experience and don’t forget to try the garlic butter.

Shiz, Munchkinland & the Emerald City

Filmed near: Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire

One of the most fascinating production facts about Wicked is that Shiz University, Munchkinland, and the Emerald City were all filmed in the same field near the village of Ivinghoe.

Rather than relying entirely on CGI, the production built massive practical sets in this rural area, transforming the landscape into multiple iconic locations from Oz. (Source: BBC)

Today, the exact field is inaccessible to the general public, but fans can still enjoy the surrounding countryside and canals. Ivinghoe Beacon, part of the Chiltern Hills, offers sweeping views and excellent hiking trails — making this stop worthwhile even beyond its Wicked connection.

Travel tip: Take a train from central London to Cheddington station or Tring station to see the area. Grab a bite to eat at the Rose & Crown pub in Ivinghoe. You won’t be disappointed if you order the fish & chips.

Royal Pavilion, Brighton (Wicked Inspiration)

The Royal Pavilion in Brighton wasn’t used as a direct filming location, but it played a major role as visual inspiration for Wicked’s set and architectural design — particularly for the more ornate and fantastical elements of Oz. (Source: Variety)

With its Indo-Saracenic architecture, domes, and lavish interiors, it’s easy to see how this palace influenced the look and feel of places like Shiz University.

Brighton itself is a lively seaside city, making this a convenient and enjoyable day trip from London.

Travel tip: LGBTQIA+ friendly city! Feel free to stroll along the oceanfront or take in The Lanes — an eclectic blend of colorful streets. I recommend Dukes Lane, Sydney Street, Kensington Gardens and Trafalgar Lane. Hungry? Grab a Japanese lunch at Pompoko

Seven Sisters Country Park

Seven Sisters Country Park appears in Wicked — but it’s important to clarify how.

  • Confirmed filming location: The Cuckmere River was used as the waterway leading to Shiz University.

  • Not filmed here: Elphaba’s “The Wizard and I” cliffside moment.

The dramatic white cliffs of Seven Sisters served as visual inspiration for Elphaba’s emotional cliffside scene, but that specific moment was actually filmed back in the field near Ivinghoe, not at the cliffs themselves. (Source: Splash News via Daily Mail)

Personally, I do think that they could have filmed this sequence in both locations to fully round out the scene, but I have found nothing to confirm that Cynthia Erivo was ever standing in Seven Sisters Country Park.

Likewise, while there are photos confirming Galinda’s boat was floating in the Cuckmere River, I have found no photos confirming that Ariana Grande was here. The shots of this river in the film are wide, establishing frames so it is possible that a Galinda double was used or no actors were involved at all. (Source: The Argus)

That said, Seven Sisters is still one of the most breathtaking landscapes in England and absolutely worth visiting. The park’s rivers, grasslands, and coastal paths make it easy to imagine how it influenced the visual language of Shiz and Oz as a whole.

Travel tip: Book a night at The Wellington Hotel in Seaford and catch a quick bus ride over to the park.

The Yellow Brick Road (Hankley Common)

Hankley Common is where the iconic Yellow Brick Road scenes were filmed, as confirmed by a personal phone call I made to the Surrey Film Office. Specifically, you can see its rural landscape featured prominently in the opening sequence of Wicked: For Good, as the road is being built.

This vast heathland has been used in countless films and TV shows thanks to its otherworldly, open landscape. For Wicked and Wicked: For Good, the production transformed parts of the common into the Yellow Brick Road, blending practical sets with digital enhancements.

Walking through Hankley Common today, you’ll find expansive views, sandy paths, and a sense of scale that makes it easy to picture how Oz came to life here.

Travel tip: I matched production photos with trail maps to pin the exact spot of the Yellow Brick Road. Download the complete map above and navigate to the location yourself to stand right where Elphie once stood.

How to Visit Wicked Filming Locations

Transportation options:

  • London + Brighton can easily be done by train

  • Seven Sisters is accessible via train to Seaford or Eastbourne

  • Ivinghoe, Norfolk & Hankley Common would be spots I’d suggest visiting with a rental car

Only have 2 days? I’d recommend booking the following:

  • Day 1 - Explore Hampstead by day and take a train to Brighton in the afternoon. Stay overnight in Brighton.

  • Day 2 - Take a train to Seaford and bus to Seven Sisters Country Park. Return to London and see Wicked in the West End.

Final Thoughts

Seeing Wicked on screen is magical — but visiting the real places that helped bring Oz to life adds an entirely new layer to the experience. In a weird way, it can be likened to a live theater performance, where the production feels alive and tangible. And, honestly, it’s all we have for now while we await an announcement from Universal Studios unveiling a new Oz-themed land at one of their parks. Here’s to hoping!
